Actually, he did play a meaningful role in creating the EU. He reviewed the works of various authors before hand-selecting Zahn, as he felt Zahn had what it took to do his characters justice. He instructed Zahn to remain consistent with WEG sourcebooks (and used them himself). https://twitter.com/Lidrev21/status/1253018123588034561
He answered questions and accepted or vetoed suggestions from Zahn throughout the writing of the Heir trilogy. Many EU authors complained about the level of "interference" from Lucasfilm; the EU was always strictly overseen by the creator to make sure it absolutely was Star Wars.
Lucas later incorporated elements from the EU into the Prequels and the Special Editions, such as the name of Coruscant, the character of Aayla Secura, & even Force powers from video games. This proves he validated the EU as equal status with his personal creations. And speaking>
>of "his personal creation," Lucas didn't personally craft every single aspect of the six films, which means this model of closely supervised but independent creation is a powerful thread woven throughout the entire realcanon. He was just as involved in the EU as he was with ESB.
That is why it was so earth-shattering when Lucasfilm said they were rebooting in 2014 & why it's impossible for any part of Disney's post-2014 canon to be part of Lucas' Star Wars; they abandoned what he created AND abandoned him as well. He's played *no* part in their canon.
When Lucas has spoken about their canon, he has done so in flatly negative terms. Unlike the EU, which he consistently emphasized was part of his films, the Disney films have been roundly rejected by Star Wars' creator.

No part of Disney canon is any part of real Star Wars. /end
