I’m gonna call this next architectural boredom thread “houses touching houses,” you know, row houses and the like. Here are some examples in Chicago’s Gold Coast.
There are more of course, but I personally think these are the 2 best examples of row houses in the historic commuter suburb of Oak Park.

L: Emerson Ingalls Rowhouses (1892) by local architect William J. Van Keuren

R: Edmund F. Burton Row Houses (1892) by Wilet & Pashley
Some Lincoln Park examples of “houses touching houses.”

Bottom right is part of Chicago’s Arlington Deming District, these three homes were all built in 1895-96. Although not technically row houses, all are touching and certainly not practicing #SocialDistancing. 😉
Competing mentor and student examples of “houses touching houses” (also North vs. South Side) with Louis Sullivan’s Ann Halsted Row Houses (1884-85) on the left and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robert Roloson Row Houses (1894) on the (w)right.
Bringing it back to my Elgin thread from last week with some more examples of “houses touching houses.” Elgin is such a great place if you want to go back in time. 🕰
This next one is dedicated to @chownlife - the Pullman National Monument is probably one of the best collections you’ll find in the city of Chicago of 19th century row houses. Architect S.S. Beman designed 1300 housing units for the Pullman factory workers.
We can’t forget about Hyde Park/Kenwood, an area full of “houses touching houses.”
To quote @bobvbh, “Alta Vista Terrace defines houses touching houses.” Inspired by a trip to London, developer Samuel Gross built this block of 40 row houses of various architectural styles in 1904 w/one side mirroring the other. In 1971 it became Chicago’s 1st historic district.
I’m ending this thread with 4 more random examples of “houses touching houses”: McCormick Row Houses (1884-89), which I still can’t believe DePaul wanted to tear down; Onahan Row Houses (1870s) in Little Italy; 1880s row homes in East Garfield Park; & 1896 row house in La Grange.
