I tend to think critics of “billionaire philanthropy” are mostly misguided.

But the actual conduct of business enterprises is far too socially important for executives to act as egotists in their day job and then become altruists after hours. It doesn’t work.
People who complain about the media get this right incidentally.

Journalism is a business but “we did it to make money” is obviously not be an adequate of bad editorial decisions. But that same principle is true of all kinds of businesses.
I think that’s entirely compatible with both @ezraklein’s points and @pmarca’s which I generally agree with, but more than Ezra I genuinely do look to the realm of ideas as a real source of problems and not just to structural issues.
