I get extra annoyed when people come for me saying I don’t understand racism or discrimination because of how I look. Y’all would be so vexed to know I was born from a Puerto Rican woman and I had to watch her work 10x as hard just to be acknowledged in a room full of whites.
At 15 I had to watch my mom be discriminated against when we drove across the country by a state trooper. Who separated me from my mom and questioned me separately from her because our skin colors are different. He kept asking me if my father knew where I was.
He made her leave the car and go over to his car and tried to get her to go inside. I was so afraid for her safety and mines. Imagine being a dark skinned woman on a Nebraska highway. Only for this man to assert some sort of authority so he could have a power trip.
I’ve watched my mom fight to keep her corporate job because some white woman decided to open an HR review on her over pettiness. My mom had to be exceptional just to be considered to keep her job. While this bitch was allowed to be mediocre
It hurts me to know that my mom has to have an extraordinary resume just to land an interview so it doesn’t end up in the reject pile based solely on her name. And then in that interview she has to impress. This is something that I’ve never had to experience.
This thread went off a little but it’s all to say that we need to stop judging a persons ability to have insight and an opinion based on their outward appearance. Yes my name and my appearance is white, but I am a Latina, and I’ve seen what it’s like, that’s why I get so angry.
