Vince Gironda's BREATH TRAINING

1917 — 1997

If there ever was an individual who defined the term, ‘OG’, it was Vince Gironda.

Today we will look at how Vince incorporated breathe as a major factor to his art.

THREAD:
If there ever was an individual who defined the term, ‘OG’, it was Vince Gironda.

Known as the ‘Iron Guru’, Vince was the thinking man’s bodybuilder. He was a physical culturist whose mind was an anabolic as the rest of his body combined.
He was also the consummate intuit. For him, progress was observed in the mirror, not on the scales.

He was one of the first to adopt a low carb — high fat diet, and start to use supplements.
Vince was an extremely unorthodox trainer; his often times left-field approach flew under the mainstream radar as much back then as it does now.

He trained some of the preeminent bodybuilders of the Golden Era, including Arnie, and Frank Zane.
He created the 8x8, with 15-30 second rest b/w sets.

It's a race against the clock.
HYPERVENTILATION

Vince believed you could increase fat loss through breathing.

“Breathing is the best fat trimmer of them all"
A quick caveat down the scientific reasoning for this:

Fat oxidation (lipolysis) the breakdown of fat tissue.

A fat molecule, when broken down gives you 55 units of CO2 and 52 units of water and energy (ATP).
In order to breakdown fat into CO2 and water we need oxygen. So in order to breakdown 10kg of fat we need 29kg of inhaled oxygen.

The metabolic fate of fat (ie. for fat to leave the body it must escape as CO2 through breath and water through sweat) we need to breathe in oxygen…
So how did he do it?

Gironda used breath control & hyperventilation in the recovery period b/w each set.

You could do this as a way of timing the duration of your rest period.

The rest would be the duration of 10-12 hyperventilated breaths.
One could also note that using this breath work creates an oxygen load for your muscles, which would prolong energy generation and your exertion levels.
Vince's active breath work — Breathing in and out on both the eccentric and concentric parts of the lift.

This combination make workouts more cardiovascular oriented, without thew need for cardiovascular exercises like running, stair mill and incline walks.
