Had some time to look at the NPD USA games market report.

Here are 3 key points:

1. Nintendo sold more Switch hardware in March 2020 than in its launch month (March 2017) and more than any console has in any March. A new March hardware sales record.
Reason behind strong Switch sales in March:
1) Animal Crossing launch
2) COVID-19 lockdowns leading to at home gaming surge
3) Fear of shortages driving demand

The last time a console sold more than this in a non holiday month was the DS in April 2009, thanks to DSi launch.
2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons had a record breaking launch, higher than any Mario and Zelda game.

My personal estimate, not related to NPD, is that the game has sold through over 9m units worldwide as of the end of March. https://twitter.com/MatPiscatella/status/1252583342790152194?s=20
3. NPD says video game software sales were up 34% YoY, making this the best March since 2008.

This is true for what NPD track, as they have only ever tracked a portion of the market. Which is fine because that's all they claim to track.

But this is really the best March ever
NPD tracks packaged software for Console/PC and some digital full game sales.

But the overall games market is much larger than it was a decade ago, especially when accounting for all digital downloads, F2P console/PC game spend, add on spend and mobile game spending.
