It's #EarthDay and bird migration season is well underway across North America. Many birds (we're talking billions!) are returning to their breeding grounds across Canada. How can you help our bird migrants while we shelter at home? We're glad you asked! https://www.rom.on.ca/en/collections-research/magazine/how-can-you-help-birds
Keep your cat inside with you!đŸ˜ŒDomestic cats are one of the biggest threats to birds. It’s estimated that cats in Canada are responsible for between 100-350 million bird deaths per year. Young birds like these fledgling Canada Geese are particularly vulnerable to cat predation.
Turn off the lights when not using a room. Window collisions are a major risk to birds. Reducing light pollution helps save birds and the lowered energy bill saves you money. @FLAPCanada's layout at the ROM raises awareness for 25M bird deaths each year from window collision.
Switch your coffee – look for a coffee certified as bird friendly or shade grown. these coffees are grown on farms that work to create a natural forest-like habitat that is better for birds. Did you know many of our local birds migrate to coffee-growing regions?
Reduce your consumption of single use plastics. Birds looking for a bite to eat can be confused by single use plastics and may swallow them or become fatally injured by items like beer rings or even drink containers and lids.
Now is a perfect time to pause and consider the beauty and fragility of the natural world around us - whether you're reflecting with a quiet moment in the backyard, on a balcony, or the view from a window. Our feathered friends thank you!
