In almost ten years of Tory governments there have been ten appointments to the position of Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport. Given Tory ministers barely last a year in the role, do you not think the creative industries deserve better?
I asked the Minister if he knew how many self-employed people in the creative industries were not covered by the government's coronavirus schemes. He didn't know.
So I told him. The Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates 38% of those who are self-employed are not covered by the government's schemes which would mean 52,000 people in the music industry alone.
I asked the Secretary of State if he would personally push, in government, for greater help to those people who are self-employed but fall between the gaps of help currently on offer.
Today musicians make the majority of their earnings through live performances. With many musicians currently not performing and struggling I asked the Minister if hew knew how little the giant streaming companies pay musicians.
A lot of people in the creative industries have seen their work used and abused by tech giants without permission or recompense on sites such as YouTube. I asked the Minister to promise to look into fixing this broken system.
Finally I asked the Minister if the government had a post Covid-19 plan to support the industry and the infrastructure to ensure performers can continue to make a living in the future.
