My grandma told me that when she got to America, many of the American Jews she encountered were cruel to the Jewish Holocaust survivors and resented them, called them a derogatory word for “refugee”, thought of them as poor and dirty, and did not interact with them or help them.

I know this is uncomfortable to talk about and bring up which is why I don’t.

But it was a thing.

And I sometimes think that occasionally we still see the rippling effects of that clash play out.
