In Orthodox Judaism, men aren't allowed to hear women sing ("kol isha" - "a woman's voice"). The Talmud classifies this as "ervah" - literally "nakedness."

Can anyone enlighten me with an explanation that isn't rooted in sexism, misogyny, & oppression of women? I'm listening.
To me, it's yet another law that oppresses women, inhibiting their access to self-expression, creativity, joy, & meaning. And a gross objectification of the female voice.

It should surprise no-one that the #1 reason women report for leaving Orthodox Judaism is gender inequality.
As predicted, here we learn what we didn't know previously - women are oppressed & silenced because they're actually more special than men.
