2020 will be a year of massive fracturing in media. Lots of layoffs. But also lots of new publications being formed on @SubstackInc as paid newsletters, @patreon as podcasts/vlogs, etc. The infrastructure here will be the big winners + we'll see a boom in tribalism emerge around
these new media brands that are formed, with one or two people at first... it's something we've seen happen on Twitter, YT, etc for a while. The result is going to be very interesting for startups looking to pitch because the typical campaign target list will get 10x bigger
which means the value of forming real relationships will have to go up, because otherwise it all just gets lost in email spam folders. As for media consumers, there is a huge bump happening to the 5th estate that this will only expedite. Problem for our society is
there will be SO SO SO many sources of "Truth" -- all as real and relevant to their tribes as the next. 3rd + 4th estates have been the biggest losers during #COVID19 and we're in very uncharted waters now.
Optimistic bet - local media, fueled by tribe of social contract, will have a rebirth. e.g You'll pay to fund that reporter's newsletter bc you live in Miami and really want that investigative reporting to happen + don't need a sports section to tell you the box scores anymore.
