I believe the vast majority of people care tremendously about the state of the environment--about animals, clean air & water, and a survivable future.
But I also believe helping the environment seems so huge and impossible that most people can't bear to think about it.
It is far easier to mourn the loss of our beautiful world than to imagine dismantling the machinery of capitalism and greed that threatens it.
I give into despair about four days out of every seven.
And then I am reminded there are people doing things big and small to help.
Big, like indigenous people putting their bodies on the line to stop oil lines.
Small, like @jeffvandermeer planting native plants in his yard.
Some people are trying to reshape the way we think about the invisible systems that drive our behavior, like @CostaSamaras, who delves into transportation. Or @BuildSoil, who encourages us to rethink where our food comes from.
And some people are doing what they can to inspire us and encourage us, like @Brkbru, who shares wonderfully healing photos of cute animals every day, or like @JulianHoffman, whose new book about land protectors I am slowly devouring.
Our civilization is enormous and complicated and it will take complicated, enormous activity to reimagine and recreate it.
Maybe we can see that as an opportunity.
Maybe we can all find our place and our power. Maybe it has always been there, waiting for us to step up to it, hiding behind despair, inertia, and the ten thousand distractions of modern life.
If so, now is the time to step up to it. Millions of human beings who have been pushed to the outermost edge of our system are depending on us. (Human beings are a very important part of the ecosystem--don't forget it!)
Trillions of insects teetering on the edge of extinction depend on us.
Billions of birds being crowded out of existence depend on us.
We are at such a critical moment in the history of this planet that every ONE person, every ONE creature, every ONE plant we can save is absolutely, resolutely worth it.

To save even one species will affect the destinies of each and every one of us.
So I am asking myself not to be so scared all the time. I can help one bird. I make a donation to help one tribe. I can write a book to encourage and renew the spirit of other fighters.
I don't have to do this all by myself.
I can do a little every day, just like you can.
It's not just that we make it Earth Day, every day. We make it Earth Day EVERYDAY.
That we make helping each other and the planet an ordinary part of our life.
And for fuck's sake, vote for people that care about the planet!
The choices you make at the ballot box will be written in the fossil record forever.
