Happy #EarthDay everyone! In appreciation of this planet we call home, let’s talk about how Dallas residents are fighting for a bolder climate plan to protect our communities from climate change! Thread — 1/13
In 2017 @DallasMayor pledged that Dallas will uphold the Paris Climate Agreement. That started the development of the Comprehensive Environmental & Climate Action Plan (CECAP) behind closed doors w/ a private contractor, AECOM. 2/13
The final draft of the CECAP was released yesterday, to be passed on May 27th. The problem? The CECAP isn’t enough to address climate change in Dallas… it doesn’t even meet its OWN emission goals. 3/13
The CECAP targeted a reduction in GHG emissions by 43% in 2030 and by 100% in 2050, yet the final draft projects reduced emissions by a meager 25% in 2030 and by 66% in 2050. 4/13
So local orgs (including some CECAP stakeholders) and activist groups formed a coalition to write a People’s Climate Action Plan that proposes bolder, more equitable, and people-focused actions that get us to net-zero emissions as soon as possible. 5/13
Our climate plan lays out 74 unique climate actions to strengthen the CECAP — 4 of which we’ve highlighted as our priority demands. 6/13
Demand 1: Establish a municipally and publicly-owned utility, in order to get us to a green grid faster and more equitably. 7/13
Demand 2: Eliminate gas hookups in new construction and transition away from the Atmos Energy system. Methane, released by natural gas, traps 86x more heat than CO2... and @dallasnews found more than 2,000 alleged safety violations by Atmos Mid-Tex in the last decade! 8/13
Demand 3: Advocate for all-electric DART transportation vehicles and eliminate fares to increase ridership. Free and expanded public transit would reduce poverty, increase freedom and mobility, and take polluting cars off the road! 9/13
Demand 4: Bring back a resident-led commission to review environmental policies and give them a fair vote. Our city’s climate plan must be democratically accountable to ALL Dallas residents and communities. 10/13
We chose these 4 demands because we believe they are crucial actions for addressing climate change that aren’t in the CECAP. Without them, we aren’t even doing the bare minimum. 11/13
How would these demands or the other 70 actions in our People’s Climate Action Plan affect you? Later today, we will be releasing a video testimony with Dallas residents' answers. 12/13
