When I hear the news about layoffs/furloughs @protocol, @voxdotcom, @GroupNineMedia, @bustle, @cheddar, and more I feel a mix of emotions.

I feel awful for the amazing creators who lost their job. What a terrible thing to go through.

I also feel lucky to be @TheHustle.

The first call I ever did with @theSamParr in 2016 all he talked about was diversifying away from an ad dependent product.

My only experience was working at advertising dependent media companies, so I saw up close what he was talking about.

Publishers chose to not build a direct relationship with their audience.

Pubs refused to charge their audience for valuable products.

Pubs raised too much VC.

Pubs made their site impossible to use with all the banner ads.

Publishers were setting themselves up to fall.
@TheHustle has avoided those mistakes.

We built a direct relationship with more than 1.2M subs, thriving subscription biz, hosted conferences around the country, no banner ads, and no VC.

It's those decisions why we're in a position today to hire the best creators.
Yes, in the midst of COVID, we're hiring for business writers, reporters, and analysts.
