[A thread on toxic prisons]
Prisons are a manifestation of environmental racism. The struggles for environmental justice and prison abolition are inherently connected.
Incarcerated people across the country are trapped in toxic conditions, made only more deadly by the rapid spread of COVID19 within facilities. These issues are exacerbated by horrific health care access.
Prisons are often built on toxic land where incarcerated people and surrounding communities are exposed to harmful pollutants and contaminated drinking water.
The toxic environmental conditions of the prison make incarcerated people, prison workers, and surrounding communities acutely more susceptible to illness.
Prisons are overpopulated and under-regulated creating mass environmental damage, expelling sewage, and industrial waste into delicate ecosystems and waterways. Their construction and operation threaten surrounding wildlife and ecosystems.
By keeping people in prisons the government facilities exempt millions of people not only from the current CDC health guidelines surrounding COVID but from basic environmental and health safeguards.
The fight for prison abolition takes place at the intersection of social and environmental justice. The environmental and social toxicity of prisons is yet another reason to end mass incarceration and close all existing prison facilities.
