I’m attending a virtual meeting of Northeastern’s faculty senate today, where Provost James Bean will be giving a report and taking questions from faculty. I’ll be sharing any takeaways/quotes in this thread:
Provost Bean says raises for faculty are being deferred and that since we don't know what will happen in the fall, we don't know what will happen with raises
NU is gearing up to improve online learning through a three pronged attack:
1. Hiring education tech consultants for each college
2. Developing a list of faculty who are experts in online learning to mentor other faculty
3. Training PhD students to be experts in online learning
Bean says there is a low probability of fall being online. They are assuming there will be students on campus, but there will be extreme restrictions. This will cause issues with housing and classrooms, and there will be a combination of virtual and face-to-face learning
If they're all online in the fall, they expect a lot of undergraduates to defer
A concern is international students being able to get visas, especially for graduate students
Overall cost of COVID-19 has been around $40 million, Bean said, and is almost entirely from room and board fees
Bean says they have been in conversation with a dozen over provosts from other universities about a fall semester decision. They haven't set a specific date for a fall decision yet and are trying to get as much information as possible
Bean said for most students a tuition decrease won't make a difference because if classes are online they know students will defer
That's it for the Provost report. Main takeaways:
-$40 million loss in housing refunds
-Expecting a lot of students to defer if fall is online
-Planning on fall being in-person, but housing and classroom will look very different
-No date yet for when a fall decision will be made

Bean said the real fear with online learning is that without experiential learning, there's no way to differentiate NU from other universities
