I've received some feedback on this interview - which is a pretty frank discussion of how purity culture rhetoric veered from scripture in damaging, dangerous ways - some have been virtually nodding their heads, while others have pushed-back, explaining that they https://twitter.com/theworthybook/status/1252594214019510280
weren't taught these things in their church. And I believe them. Purity culture was mainly taught in youth group, through books and conferences and camps and programs. I didn't hear these messages from my godly parents.
And reevaluating purity culture isn't about finding people to blame, but about stepping back as a Church and humbling ourselves enough to reassess some of the messages and methods we have used to communicate about sexuality.
I hope that, even if #talkingbacktopurityculture rubs you the wrong way, you'll read the book and see what it's all about. My goal is to start a conversation, not end it. My goal is that we would be more biblical, not less, in our discussion of sexuality.
Also, props to @ElyseFitz and @emschumacher for entering the fray of this conversation. It's not easy, and I so appreciate their willingness to talk about it.
