Like many artists & scholars, #COVID19 has postponed or cancelled my shows, residency & lectures.

To make up for this lost income I’ve made a Patreon.

I'm going to use this thread to show you the historical artwork that I make

Hope you can contribute!

My work focuses on Black history, highlighting how our past can help explain our current political & social conditions. Most of my practice is research, in books or in the archive.

The 3 part of my artwork are:
• Portraiture
• Wood Working
• The recreation or reimagining or historical documents.

When I make documents I use vintage early 20th or 19th century blank sheets of paper (from old books). Sometimes I recreate a document verbatim, or I take historical text & format it after that era's graphic design.

Found this text with generous help from @EthanKytle

The red intro text are my words, the rest is from an 1876 speech by William J. Rivers, steeped in the Lost Cause.

The formatting is after late 19th century book ads, found in the back of paperbacks.

At the end of last year I was the visiting artist in @TylerSchool's print making department. Using @TempleLibraries archive I formatted & edited, & we printed, a version of Du Bois 7th Ward map.

Frame building is also an important aspect of my work. I design & build these frames myself & model their design after the time period of the subject matter they hold.

This small frame houses a recreated doc, found in the Maryland archive by historian Carol Wilson. This 1845 ad directly showing Washington College's financial link to enslavement.

Now portraiture is something I have been doing since I was a kid & is the foundation of my practice.

I make sure the image's original medium is evident, making it clear that these are after daguerreotypes, film, newspaper clippings or video stills. The intent is to show that the way these images were originally created is just as important as the subject

The idea is to investigate the different ways images, in there varying forms, structure the way we visually comprehend our history and define our present.

This is the main piece in my series about the Superhumanization of African Americans.
