A very concerning incident happened yesterday regarding the U.S., Spain & Gibraltar.

A U.S. KC-130 Hercules flying over Gibraltar had its second programmed approach denied by Seville air traffic control (ATC) despite being under Gibraltar ATC control and being cleared.
Spain restricts NATO assets visiting Gibraltar. Ships departing Gib are not allowed to visit Spain without first stopping somewhere else. Also true for aircraft. A USAF plane flying between Rota & Gibraltar has to detour either to Faro in Portugal, or to Tangier in Morocco, first
In fact, NATO Standardized Agreement 1100, which sets out the procedures for visits to NATO and non-NATO ports by naval ships of NATO nations, contains a reservation that prevents visits by NATO ships to or from Gibraltar directly to or from Spanish ports.
Due to STANAG 1100 any request by military aircraft from NATO members that arrives or departs the Gibraltar airfield and overflies or lands in Spain is routinely denied by Spanish authorities.

THIS IS CRAZY TOWN!
The US military is very active in the Mediterranean. The US presence in the region is important due to the security situation in North Africa. Spain, like other southern members of NATO, benefits greatly from the security offered by the presence of the US military in the region.
It is in NATO’s interest that its aircraft & vessels can travel freely between all friendly ports and bases in the region—including Gibraltar’s. It is astonishing that Spain should impose such burdensome restrictions on a NATO allies.
Finally, while we are on the subject of Spain and Gibraltar we should never forget the astonishing amount of hypocrisy and double standards coming from Madrid. While Spain complains about British sovereignty over Gibraltar, this is what Spain has in North Africa 👇🏻
