I could make a snide comment about deterrence here, but I'm not going to.

You know why? Because the Trump administration's Iran policy has been an utter clownshow.

It's a disaster that Americans will be paying the price for -- potentially for a generation. https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1252932181447630848
In three years, we've gone from the best US-Iran relationship since the revolution to:

- sanctions that are worsening a plague
- a mostly unchained nuclear program
- empowered hardliners
- our allies in Europe seeking ways to violate sanctions
- increased tensions in the Gulf
And the worst part? None of it has solved any of the problems that Iran hawks claimed they had with the JCPOA.

Iran's regional activity is worse than ever, they still have a missile program, and the civilian nuclear program is under fewer safeguards today than three years ago.
Perhaps it's no surprise then that the mask is finally coming off. Proponents of 'maximum pressure' never wanted a better deal. They want regime change in Iran, by any means necessary.

American foreign policy will be paying the price for a long time. https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/middle-east/2020-04-13/next-iranian-revolution
