Link building has to be the hardest part of SEO (thread).

Unlike technical prowess in terms of code, fetch and render, webperf, IA, etc. it's more nuanced...

It requires just as much creativity (if not more) as it does process, tools, and talent.
Those who do it best have figured out how to:

1) Identify patterns that allow them to prospect as if doing ABM

2) Aggregate that data into sustainable systems that allow for retrieval and curation on an individual campaign basis

3) Find *accurate* contact information at scale
4) Craft pitches that are personal, meaningful, and invoke emotion, thus driving action.

5) Customize templates in a way that can be supported with a standardized dataset

6) Manage tools designed to support sending thousands of emails every. single. day.
7) Understand basic sales strategy to negotiate (where the bulk of the time, and I'd argue talent, actually comes in).

8) Build real relationships with publishers, influencers, and direct audiences.

9) Leverage automation wherever possible to maximize the effectiveness of 1-8
10) Not lose their mind managing a "digital salad bar" that needs fresh ingredients prepared each and every day to continue to operate.

All put together, it's NO SURPRISE that link building (and more so, Outreach) is so. effing. challenging.
We spent years (YEARS) making mistakes and refining our process and tech stack.
