Today is Earth Day.
Most humans are decent in terms of how the Earth is treated, but a handful of powerful people and entities are threatening our ability survive on this planet.
It's important to remember that we can't kill Earth. We can barely harm Earth. When we allow powerful people to skirt around eco-friendly policies, we are slowly killing our own species—humans. But Earth has been here for billions of years & she's going to be here a million more.
There are some small things you can do for your town that is good for Earth. The most important of these things is helping to get carbon back into the ground.
Carbon traps heat. That is why you see the phrase "reduce carbon emissions." Because carbon emissions are causing Earth to warm up.
But what I do not see enough is the discussion around how our soil helps our Earth to regulate carbon.
I don't want to get controversial here, but please consider things that assist in replenishing your local soil.
Planting trees is good. Sowing legumes is good. Composting is very, very good. Encouraging biodiversity is good. Getting rid of your landscaping is good. Bringing pollinators back to your yard and neighborhood with nutrient native plant & flower species is very good.
Green spaces and trees in urban areas are deeply important. If you live in a city, see how you can get involved in encouraging the development of these spaces.
Today we thank Earth for hosting us.
Happy Earth Day.
