asking for exhibitors in the current climate to pay ÂŁ20+ for a page on their website with no payment support is...hmmm...
please just link to everyone’s already-made online shops please please
I’ve been emailing with elc*f and here is what they said:

- Nobr*w provide no money.
- Nobr*w do provide support such as office space and marketing.
- ELC*F receive no money from the majority of their partnerships.
- Arts Council funding pays 90% of the salaries of the team of three part time freelancers organising the event.
- I asked to see a breakdown of funding and spending but they said they’re not at liberty to share the details. They said as per AC funding, all income and outgoings
have to be to be balanced and none of their workings are based on profit.
- They want to continue to be eligible for the funding and have the resources to hold the festival next year. (IIRC if AC funding isn’t used you lose it next year, but I don’t no if there’s corona changes)
- Money from table fees/ticket sales goes towards everything else (graphic designers, AV staff, guest artists, production costs, venue hire) also web redesign for Digital ELC*F.
- The charge for Digital ELC*F is being used to cover these costs.
- I was more interested in asking why the sellers will be charged but I couldn’t get a firm grasp of how it will all work, especially with payments - I appreciate this is still WIP tho.
- ELC*F will be sending more info soon to explain thinking with more transparency.
This is my position - it’s too waffley for a snappy tweet sorry haha
Quite a few people DM-ing me to say thanks for tweeting this (which I appreciate! Thank you!) but we all need to start speaking out about this stuff publicly or nothing will change! You deserve better than being used as a disposable source of money or content
Who wants to unionise lmao....get in touch
One last thing because I’m tired of this being something everyone talks about but is never said:
Apparently this is how much you get paid for a Nobr*w book!!!
(If you’ve worked for them and it’s different from what you were paid, please feel free to say - it’s always helpful to compare rates) https://twitter.com/emmaillustrate/status/1253779769898000386?s=21">https://twitter.com/emmaillus...
I’ve just heard that apparently for a 32 page comic you’ll be paid £400!!!!!
Another incredible thread of how bad nobr*w’s practice is! https://twitter.com/deadtreesanddye/status/1253748853188296704?s=21">https://twitter.com/deadtrees... https://twitter.com/deadtreesanddye/status/1253748853188296704">https://twitter.com/deadtrees...
An example of nobr*w’s record with not paying for their artist’s work:

I’ve heard that they would only pay 1-2k for a huge graphic novel done in an extremely short time frame
People have been getting in touch regarding the contracts side.
I’ve heard this includes:
- Nobrow owning media rights
- Nobrow owning the rights to your work for 7 years
- blocking you from working with other publishers for years after you’ve worked with Nobrow

Wrt royalties I’ve heard:
-many people not getting paid any at all
-that Nobrow said they couldn’t pay them because they didn’t have the money in the bank
-only paid artists a very small fraction of what they’re owed
Example of Nobrow using students for free work for their anthology: https://twitter.com/rachel_suggs/status/1254029665376878593">https://twitter.com/rachel_su...
Lecturers, please start taking a stand against the exploitation of your students!
Nobrow has a presence in schools in the UK and beyond - if this is the case for your school (if you’re a lecturer, student, alumni) please voice your concerns with them!

There’s no shame in having worked for Nobrow - we all would’ve jumped at the chance to work with them at one point and wouldn’t have known any better!
If you don’t want to go public with your payment/experience, DM me and I’ll add it to this thread anonymously
If you’re worried about Nobrow’s staff losing their jobs, I’m afraid I’ve heard they already have - 5 people recently have been fired instead of furloughed

I’ve heard that in 2014, you could be paid a £400 advance to do a book for their 17x23 series (24 pages)

Thanks to Roman Muradov over on instagram for speaking about his own experience with Nobrow!
He was paid $1000 for everything, including designs and revisions
I’ve heard more about the working environment at Nobrow:
- extremely toxic
- no one gets credited for their work
- multiple people have been fired on the spot, including a junior editor who asked to be credited for their work.
- pay is below minimum wage
