Madonna discography ranked: a thread
before saying anything, she is the Queen of Pop so keep that in mind.
even though my ranking often changes, this is genuinely my thoughts about her albums. of course everybody has different opinions and tastes but this is my ranking.
i'm not gonna include soundtracks
let's START
14. Like a Virgin (1984) : Some of Madonna's most known hits but there are obvious fillers in it. It lacked cohesion. Lyrically weak and productionwise aged poorly. still very fun tho.
top 3: Angel, Dress You Up, Love Don't Live Here Anymore
least: Shoo-Bee-Doo
13. MDNA(2012): this could've been a very good edm album if she sticked to a theme but the album is so random. The production is unbearable at some point. some tracks sounds very generic, cheesy and soulless
top 3: Masterpiece, Beautiful Killer, Falling Free
least: BDay Song
12.Hard Candy(2008): This is a very fun record from start to end. the problem is, this doesn't feel like a Madonna album. This a typical pharell-timbaland produced album that could be anyone else's album.
top 3: Miles Away, Devil Wouldn't Recognize, She's Not Me
least: Incredible
11. Debut (1983): Such a strong debut filled with hits. very enjoyable, very fun album. 80's bubblegum pop at it's best. It's very time-reflective and Madonna didn't really show so much personality on this album.
top 3: Holiday, Borderline, Burning up
least: I know it
10. Rebel Heart(2015): Every side of her is in this album. vulnerable, unapologetic, erotic etc. The production of some tracks feels unfinished, feels rushed at some points (we all know why) but still very enjoyable album.
top 3:Wash All Over Me,Messiah,Joan of Arc
least:Body Shop
9. Madame X (2019): Very bold, very experimental, very outspoken, very diverse yet so cohesive. my only problem, she used way too much autotune than it needed, it drags the album lower for me.
top 3: God Control, Looking For Mercy, Dark Ballet
least: Bitch I'm Loca
8. True Blue (1986): This is where Madonna started growing as an artist and showing her artistic vision. Production is very 80's but doesn't sound aged at all. she served amazing vocals and songwriting.
top 3: La Isla Bonita, Live to Tell, Papa Don't Preach
least: Jimmy Jimmy
7.Music(2000): This electronica-country pop album caused a whole generation of singers to go country-pop at some point but failed to adapt the sound this well. very experimental, very futuristic, very ahead of it's time.
top 3:Paradise(Not For Me),Music,Gone
least:Nobody's Perfect
6. Like a Prayer(1989):One of her most mature works ever.this album&era pushed her from a pop star to an icon. She found her artistic vision. But i ranked it low because of some tracks doesnt sound so fresh
top 3:Like a Prayer,Express Yourself,Promise to Try
least:Act of Contrition
5. Bedtime Stories (1994): Matured, calmed version of erotica. It's very relaxing, very lush, r&b infused pop album. Also one of most underrated works ever.
top 3: Take a Bow, Secret, Human Nature
least: I'd Rather Be Your Lover
4. Erotica(1992):This boundarybreaking album's impact on pop music, especially for pop girls is unreal. She talked about all these topics in one album in a very conservative era. One of the most revolutionary albums ever.
top 3:Deeper and Deeper,Bad Girl,Rain
least:Did You Do It
3.American Life(2003):One of the boldest and most innovative albums ever.Productionwise it's very experimental.Very misunderstood album&era. One of her most vulnerable lyrics. the topics are still relatable today.
top 3:Easy Ride,X-Static Process,Nothing Fails
least:I'm So Stupid
2. Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005): She reinvented her once again to make one of the biggest comebacks ever. the perfect dance-pop album&era that still keeps influencing current pop stars. also still sounds fresh today.
top 3: Isaac, Forbidden Love, Get Together
least: Push
1. Ray of Light (1998): Her magnum opus, the bible of pop. A renaissance moment in her discography. ROL introduced acid-electronica to mainstream music and the album still sounds just as fresh.
top 3: Frozen, Nothing Really Matters, The Power of Goodbye
least: Candy Perfume Girl
