Why I prefer voice notes to phone calls, especially while working remotely, a thread

1. Voice notes are asynchronous

You don't have to wait for the other side to respond. While you're waiting on the phone, both parties are blocked and cannot be unblocked until both hang up
2. Voice notes are not intrusive

Phone calls create a sense of urgency even for things that are not urgent. Hence, it disrupts someone when they're in the flow state.

Most things you're calling for can wait a couple of hours, giving the other party plenty of time to respond
3. Voice notes don't need the person to leave the room

I don't like talking when there are other ppl in the room. When I get a call, I'm forced to find a quiet spot.

I can listen to a voice note on low volume and still respond through a text message.

Brings me to my next..
4. Voice notes cater to people who prefer either ways of comms

Some people like written comms, some like verbal. Voice notes facilitate both the kinds.

In a phone call, you're probably forcing someone to communicate in their least preferred method
5. Voice notes allows you to gather your thoughts and then respond

Not everyone likes to discuss ideas on the spot. Some of us need time to gather our thoughts, structure it, review it and then communicate.

Phone calls tend to put people on the spot when they don't have to be
6. Voice notes are documented

If you want to call someone to share an idea, send a voice note instead. You can save yourself that follow up email.

We forget a lot of things. Documenting your own raw ideas help you revisit them in the future, even if the other person ignores it
7. Voice notes allow you to eat your own words

How many times have you articulated something in a stupid or insensitive way only to realise it moments after you've said it?

Those actions are reversible with voice notes
I'm not against phone calls (maybe I am) but voice notes can solve for the same purpose in a more effective way

If you're defaulting to synchronous communication methods, you're wasting a lot of time.

They are required but not all time
