#happyearthday2020
Last year, during our first executive meeting in ABH, I told the other executives that one of my unofficial plans for ABH was to figure out a way to start recycling our plastic waste. As you know, I have an obsession with saving the planet.
We consume so much single-use plastic especially styrofoam and plastic soda bottles and the constant piling was a big concern to me. I told them that I didn't have it figured out yet but that I would work towards securing a partnership with a recycling.
It was harder than I thought. I reached out to 3 different companies, sent proposals, fixed meetings but it wasn't really taking shape. Another concern I had, which Obi had raised was taking away a source of income from the cleaners who collected and sold some of these bottles.
At the end of 2019, the Hall Chairman saw a poster requesting for plastic waste to be recycled in exchange for food items and sent the poster to me. I began communicating with the organization and soon enough, we agree to draw up an agreement
The agreement is a biweekly collection of our plastic waste by this company. The waste will be weighted and exchanged for fixed food items all of which go to the cleaners in the hall. It took about 2 months to finalize this deal.
The hall chairman judiciously saw that the contract was signed by all parties and even monitored the collection of plastics by cleaners along with the health minister. We were all so excited.
Collection was scheduled to start the weekend after the lockdown of abh. Because of the pandemic, a lot of things are uncertain at the moment. But I'm beyond grateful for an amazing team that was able to make this dream a reality.
It is our responsibility to take care of the planet in whatever way we can. It's all we've got. Remember; reduce, reuse, recycle. Thanks for making it all the way down here.
