the way that some people don’t see the issue with cancel culture until it involves their ‘faves’ makes me laugh, cancel culture is incredibly toxic, and the fact that some people dont see that is concerning
things celebrities ‘should’ be cancelled for:
- doing / saying offensive things CONTINUOUSLY, without showing signs of remorse/ guilt, or the need to change their behaviour
- obviously huge allegations, such as r*pe, domestic violence etc...
for example- if it’s clear that a celebrity has objectively racist/ homophobic views but will not acknowledge how its offensive and makes no effort to educate themselves , then that’s fucked up and they need to be held accountable
things celebrities should ‘not’ be cancelled for:
-doing / saying offensive things in the PAST, with clear evidence of remorse/guilt, and the evidence that their behaviour and views towards those topics have changed completely
a celebrity doesn’t exactly have to say ‘i’m sorry’ in order to apologise for their mistakes, i think that yes, an apology is definitely needed sometimes, but actions speak louder than words and occasionally its CLEAR that celebrity has grown
my point is, stop trying to cancel people when there is clear growth and its obvious that person would not say those same things in current years, because you’re trying to cancel a past version of them- who doesn’t exist anymore
however, you TOTALLY have the right to be offended and dislike a celebrity bc of past behaviour, you dont have to forgive them- but cancelling them bc YOU don’t forgive them? unnecessary
this goes the other way as well, you can’t expect everyone to forgive them, and thats okay! we’re all gonna have our opinions so stop trying to tell someone that they shouldn’t dislike that celebrity bc YOU like and forgive them, they may not
cancel culture drills it into your brain that nobody is allowed to fuck up, and that couldn’t be further from the truth, it’s making everyone believe that we have to have a 100% clean past, when that’s simply not possible for everyone (or anyone)
i can guarantee you we have all said shit in the past we’re not proud of, only difference is we wasn’t in the spotlight for it to be recorded- but the celebrities were
and no, i am not trying to excuse any celebrity in particular, just giving my opinion on cancel culture
as i said, you are in your right to dislike a celebrity, but stop trying to ruin their whole ass career bc of YOUR opinion, unknown to you, that celebrity has probably saved thousands, if not MILLIONS of lives, stop making ppl feel shitty bc they look up to them
if you don’t like a celebrity, stop obsessing over them and trying to cancel them, keep that shit to yourself the world doesn’t need anymore negativity right now (unless as i said the cancelling is justified)
ik we’re in quarantine, but PLEASE do something more productive 😐
