If I was in charge of F1, here’s a thread of what I’d change in the sport in the hope of making it more exciting for fans across the globe.
I’d ditch all the emission nonsense and the hybrids and bring back the naturally aspirated V12 engines. Along with that I’d bring back the recently deceased V8’s to F2 and F3. Imagine today’s superfast cars with this sound 😍😍😍. Also KERS and DRS will be allowed.
I’d bring back refuelling in the hope it keeps drivers using high engine modes in the race. But I’d let teams fit the pumps with an electronic programmer so they can select how much fuel they wanna add before the car arrives and they can remove the hose without fuel leaking out.
Tyres. I’d bring back the compounds and regulations from Pirelli’s first years, the Super Soft, Soft, Medium and Hard with the teams only allowed two dry compounds each weekend, known as Option and Prime. Hoping the higher deg meets better racing and split strategies 👍
In Qualifying I’d introduce all new rules. We’d have Q1 (20 mins), Q2 (12 mins) and then Superpole. In Q1 and Q2 drivers would have complete a minimum of 3 laps each and then take an average to decide their positions on the grid. Superpole is something seen in GT Racing 🔽
Q1 will involve all drivers, Q2 will be the top 12 from Q1 and then Superpole is a shootout for pole from the top 5 in Q2. Drivers go out one at a time to set just one lap for Pole Position. No two cars will be on track at the same time. Here’s an example at Bathurst 12h.
In Q1 and Q2, if a driver fails to complete three fast laps they will be black flagged and have to start the race from the back. In Superpole, the next driver can’t start their out lap until the previous driver has completed their fast lap.
I’d bring back the old safety car ruling. For me it spiced up the racing and made fuel saving critical. The pit lane would be closed while the safety car is out on track. Any driver that pits will receive a 10 second stop/go penalty in the race.
Also the pitlane will not reopen until all cars are in the safety car queue. This allows anyone who’s already pitted to gain track position and mechanics will have to perform at their best to give themselves the fastest pit stops, while the pit lane is super busy!
The VSC would scrapped and in place would be the full course yellow. This is safer than the VSC as under FCY, drivers can only drive under their pitlane speed limit. No one can gain or lose time. Though the pitlane would also be closed and race penalties could not be taken.
Also for a chance for the fans to the safety car, the formation lap will take place behind it before at the end it’ll peel off into the pits where the cars will then line up on the grid. Drivers can pit on a normal formation lap, but not during a safety car race start...
If Inters are the starting tyre, the safety car will start the race and be out for at least one lap and if it’s Wet tyre conditions, it will be at least three laps. Pit stops will not be permitted unless a driver is shown a black and orange flag to pit for repairs.
Now a huge difference I’d bring in, would be three car teams. Yes this gives many younger drivers a chance to make it to F1 and veteran champions more time to keep their seat (e.g. Button). More cars on track, more battles, more drivers, more racing.
When it comes to circuit changes, first thing I’d do is get in touch with Monaco and ask them to make the track wider where they can like it was in the 1990s. For me this would increase safety and overtaking opportunities.
Here I’d grant everyone’s wishes and bring back the Turkish Grand Prix. One of the best circuits ever and high on tyre wear too so would spice up races with my regulations. The races always tense and exciting with lots of overtaking. We miss you Turkey 🇹🇷
With F1 audiences growing in America, I’d keep COTA on the calendar but I’d try bringing back Indianapolis and make them back to race weekends. The insane screaming engines make this battle even more exciting, this was a great track! 73 laps can’t go wrong 🇺🇸😃
One circuit I would replace tho is Paul Ricard, for me it’s more of a test track and it’s good for racing. Magny Cours was much better, tho the middle sector is a bit narrow, tho it can be widened 🇫🇷
Adding to this thread again. One thing that some will hate me on is that I would SACK Jean Todt as FIA President. He was a big part of Ferrari during the 2007 Spygate and therefore don’t think it makes sense to be leading an organisation who wrongly disqualified his rivals.
