Ok so remember how I& #39;ve had problems with fungus gnats for a while now and just can& #39;t get rid of them, even with pesticides (lots developed immunity...) and sticky cards? THIS IS MY JUSTIFICATION FOR THE MONEY I PAID FOR THIS, THESE BBIES ARE SERVING A PURPOSE BEYOND LOOKING COOL
(I& #39;m gonna be the responsible person here and set a cn for flesh-eating plants for the entire thread so beware if, like, stuff)
Also remember how I filled a huge jug with boiled water? https://twitter.com/the_jannis/status/1252671921138946048
What& #39;s">https://twitter.com/the_janni... that for? Well. Do you know what this is?

That& #39;s right that& #39;s an effin TRUMPET PITCHER!! And it didn& #39;t come alone, IT BROUGHT ALL ITS CARNIVOROUS FRIENS WITH IT!!!
We& #39;ve got the popular VENUS FLYTRAP (dionaea muscipula) and the TRUMPET PITCHER (sarracenia) and a BUTTERWORT (pinguicula) and even the ridiculously pretty SUNDEW (drosera)!!
And, guess what. Because friends are cool and we all want to be close to those we love right now, I put 5 of these in the same, pretty pot. A glass pot no less, because these are actually pretty hard to keep and need constant standing water, which I can check best through glass!
I used soil specifically for water for this, obviously, so now I have a lot left over which I& #39;m definitely gonna use for other projects in the future, because I honestly fucking love this. The idea of water-based plants is just getting more and more attractive to me <3
I did put one trumpet pitcher - the most massive one, of course - in its own pot, because I liked the idea of having one separate one, was stunned by the sheer size of this thing and wanted flesh-eating plants at two spots in my apartment (living room and kitchen), so here we go!
I did have to specifically prepare that pot; the internal pot-holder it comes with is round like the pots it& #39;s supposed to hold, meaning there& #39;s no space for water, but the pot itself isn& #39;t entirely water-proof, so I had to lay foil onto its inner sides and put the pot into that!
(Btw, the, uhm, part from which all stems originate, I don& #39;t know plant words, help?, is super pretty too.)
The trumpet pitcher in the glass pot is actually even larger though (just not more massive), it& #39;s, just, SO high. It& #39;s ridiculous. Look (backlight-portrait for impression). I& #39;m in awe by its stability - it& #39;s holding this pose really steadily! (God, I hope I don& #39;t fuck this up.)
Oh, and the boiled water? That& #39;s because carnivorous plants need absolutely lime-free water, either rain water (which I can& #39;t efficiently collect), or boiled water. So I boiled about 8 litres and keep it in that jar, and then take water out of it when it comes to The Watering™!
I actually do need even more sterile water too - for the trumpet pitchers& #39; tubes! You pour some destilled water into that, that& #39;s good for the plant. I used a common measuring tube today which made me pour way too much; acquired a pipette now for more careful appliance next time.
And because they& #39;re so pretty, here are a couple more shots of the sundews and the venus flytraps. I& #39;m glad I finally had a reason to make this, because these are just SO beautiful and cool.
I only got the venus flytraps and the trumpet pitchers for their aesthetics - they& #39;re not actually that good for killing insects; the butterworts get that job done because of their huge surfaces, that& #39;s why I have two of those.
(And I really hope they play well in the same pot as the other plants; they& #39;re supposed to need a little less water, but I was told I could keep all of them in one pot, so.... IF I TURN OUT TO KILL ANY OF THESE I& #39;M GONNA BE CROSS)
I spent SO much time setting all of this up. The soil was so heavy to carry, and these plants have so many nooks and crannies and just so many tiny, sensitive parts to them that I needed to be extra extra careful setting them all into this pot and the soil between them.
Luckily, I got a lot of love and care to give and I think this turned out very fine. It& #39;s always such a mess during the setup process and then turns out this pretty at the end still - an amazing payoff! Now I just hope I can keep them alive and care for them as they need it!!
Anyway, that& #39;s it! I& #39;m supes happy about these new additions to my ever-growing plant family and hope you enjoyed this too. And remember, if you decide to get some of these for your own: a) ASK AND RESEARCH THE AMOUNT OF WATER THEY NEED, b) They need LOTS of sun, ALL of it, ...
c) They don& #39;t need to be fertilized, that& #39;s what the insects are for; some carnivorous plants are even so oriented at insect-consumption that their genes dropped the capability of producing a certain enzyme plants usually have to get specific nutrients out of the ground, ...
d) Don& #39;t play with them or have anything or anyone (kids, PETS) play with them; e) Venus Flytraps only open and close up to 8 times and then die, that& #39;s fine and intended, f) Don& #39;t deliberately feed them, let them stay outside if you think your apartment doesn& #39;t have enough!
I had held off of these before because they were honestly kinda scary for me, but now I had good reason and am SO happy I jumped over my shadow there, because, well, I mean, this thread kinda speaks for itself I think. ANYWAY THANKS FOR READING BYYEEEE
