A thread for #EarthDay2020 . Growing trees and harvesting timber allows us to develop and build beautiful homes with minimal impact on Earth's natural systems. We believe growing, producing and using wood locally is the most sensible option, and here’s why...
Though it may seem counter intuitive, we support UK woodland by using British wood. The felling of older mature trees makes space for new carbon absorbing saplings to flourish – and the woodland is earning money to support its ongoing management.
At the Accelerating Woodland Creation conference, @ZacGoldsmith talked about ‘a conveyor belt of carbon’ and we need to work together and plan ahead to make that happen. We should make full use of our local timber resources before importing from further afield.
Using wood sustainably must involve using local wood where possible, and this requires us to find uses for the species and grades that grow in our woodlands. Sourcing our raw material locally and responsibly is a good start.
Developing markets for the timber we have, and developing sustainable timber products to meet the needs of the market in future has to make sense.
