The idea that the middle class hates social grants because of some underlying fear/knowledge that they’re close to poverty is nice but that’s not it.

They hate social grants because they feel those who received them haven’t “earned” that money and bona they work “so hard!”.
Same bucket as those “I pay your salary” guys who always remind public servants that their tax is why they get a salary.

Same people who don’t believe cashiers, miners etc aren’t “skilled” workers.

They like the self-importance they can claim by being in a higher economic rank.
It’s really driven by their hate for the poor. Nothing more, nothing less.

They despise the poor. They genuinely believe that poor people are poor because they are “lazy” and they “don’t work hard enough”. (As if there are jobs out there 🙄)
The Venn diagram of these people, those who won’t give beggars money because “they must go back home!”, “they must get a job”, “they’ll just buy drugs” and those who are always hooting and complaining about the recycling guys digging through their rubbish is a circle.
These people (in Nthabi’s quoted tweet)
