Fascinating how the secularism bred of Christian theology & history now seems to be cannibalising the Church itself. It's the traditional understanding of its purpose - as a portal onto mystery, an interface with the supernatural - that's on the defensive. https://archbishopcranmer.com/revd-marcus-walker-returns-pulpit-here-i-stand/
That a priest can seriously argue that the sweeping of the world by a pandemic is not a time to be "going on about theology" would certainly have bewildered St Cyprian or Gregory the Great.
I suppose the problem for the Church is that its triumph has been so total. Its ancient sense of mission - to care for the sick, the vulnerable, the weak - has been largely subsumed within the Welfare State. The NHS is now the object of our reverence.
A time of global pandemic, I'd have thought, is precisely when the Churches should be talking about theology, when they should be maintaining a sense of themselves as portals onto mystery & the heavenly. Because otherwise what on earth are they there for?
