As I tweeted yesterday, the greatest irony of the Gov’s bungling of this crisis is not that they have bungled it bc they HAVEN'T listened to the experts (which so many ultra-Remainers desperately wish to be true bc thats their stock answer for everything) but that they HAVE.

Just incredible really. Leavers have spent four years critiquing technocratic forms of politics and pointing out that experts are not infallible. If politics was purely and simply about ‘listening to experts’ we wouldnt need politics or politicians at all would we?

We could live in a technocratic, epistocratic, benevolent dictatorship ruled by Brian Cox, Richard Dawkins & a few others. We wouldnt need democracy. We wouldnt need politicians. We could be ruled by scientists instead. If all that politics amounted to was: listening to experts.

Its so unbelievably hypocritical for leavers to make these forms of arguments.

Im sorry but you can’t argue for four years that experts are not infallible only to (when a crisis hits) hide behind:- “Oh, but we simply followed the experts advice.” No, Im sorry you cant do that. That doesn't obviate the responsibility of politicians to make their own mind up

This is why we have politicians: to make judgement calls like this. If politics was simply about ‘listening to experts’ we wouldnt need politics at all. Im not having it. Take responsibility for the decisions you’ve made and dont hide behind: “oh but we listened to the experts”
