I miss tennis, I miss those bittersweet sharp emotions from competing. So I went over some footage to re-live my time in Japan from a year ago: here are some points from that last match before my hectic, heart-in-mouth travel home began. God, I miss the grunting with effort to finish a point.
I miss the decision-making, the weighing your options in a point, finding the opportunity. I miss clenching my fist after winning a point. This is a really typical type of point for me.
Here& #39;s one with a nice aggressive backhand and a sidespin dropshot + lob combohttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="🤪" title="Zany face" aria-label="Emoji: Zany face"> Some stages in a match you throw strange stuff at your opponent either to vent frustration or to give them something to think about. Here I think it was both.
And finally -- I don& #39;t think I& #39;ve ever done this in a match before or since -- a cricket-style backhand passing shot winner improvised on the run https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😂" title="Face with tears of joy" aria-label="Emoji: Face with tears of joy">
Putting this together made me sadder & happier at the same time. Japan, the sakura season, the dignity & kindness of everyone I met, the fairest of home fans. The hobby photographers who knew no English but offered me paper slips with a web address, so I& #39;d find the photos laterhttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💟" title="Heart decoration" aria-label="Emoji: Heart decoration">
Ah yeah, the details: this was a three-set 2R match in $25k Osaka against Akiko Omae who was coming back from injury -- she had to qualify for this tournament. One year later she& #39;s WTA 245 (CH 188). I wish I knew how to straighten the videos up but I don& #39;t, so there you go.
