BTS (and ARMY) as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — a thread

so I was /gonna/ write a short (!!) note about environmentalism but it turned into this ESSAY ,, feel free to skip but just know it is an ongoing movement that relies on science, policy, activism, empathy, and consciousness of sociopolitical, economic, and racial inequities.

also, earth day and the environmental movement was sparked by this photo taken by astronaut William Anders in 1968. humans had to go all the way to space to see the earth in order for us to reaffirm our value of the planet... and the first earth day was a bit more than a year +

later, in 1970.

so yes, today is the 50th anniversary of earth day!!

also the photo is called “earthrise.” my fave pic ever.

anyways, on to the #SDGs: these are goals “which are an urgent call for action by all countries... in a global partnership.” they are part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is a plan that, to put it overly simply, aims to ~save the world~

k so where does BTS come into play?

BTS was named the Top Sustainability Future Leader, and ARMY was the Top Rank Sustainable Global Group by the Korean Association for Supporting the SDGs for the UN!

oh and, namjoon’s UN speech was actually at the launch of #Youth2030, “the UN’s strategy to engage with, but especially to empower young people” !!!

(we won’t talk abt why putting the onus on youth is harmful — hmu if u wanna talk abt my senior thesis)

but fr, “saving the planet” is multifaceted. the 17 goals compiled by the UN demonstrate the wide breadth of ways we can strive to live in a world where we take care of each other, and of our planet.
