Being poor is not a crime. If you commit a crime & you have $$, you get out of jail no matter how violent you are. But if you are poor you stay in jail. So proud to be associated w/ @PureJustice_HTX who is also leading the #bailreform fight - it’s about fairness. https://twitter.com/texaselsa/status/1252854773373530114
Cash bail is a means to keep poor people of color locked up as they wait for trial. Admittedly, as a former prosecutor, the alleged facts of Singleton’s initial case are disturbing & I DO NOT condone violence. But the fact remains the law provides that people are innocent until
Proven guilty & bond should not be used as a tool of oppression. This means that had the magistrate granted the State’s request & issued a $50,000 bond, if Singleton had $5k he could’ve bonded out - no matter how “violent” he was. This is the portion of the #Bailreform argument
That falls on deaf ears mainly due to the fearmongering & #WillieHorton cries of public safety.Yes, I care about public safety & have worked to prevent violence in #HarrisCounty longer than most who will read this thread, but I believe we must follow ALL laws not just a few.
