crit is soooo important to a healthy arts scene and ppl in this city just spend all their time making sure everyone knows crit is not safe or productive to engage in here. if you want your work to be bad that badly there’s nothing i can do to stop u i guess!
‘professional’ artists saying ‘critics need to realize it’s not about their opinion’ that’s literally..... what it’s about......... lmao
i mean this is about independent artists losing their shit at reviewers (as opposed to setting boundaries with reviewers/challenging reviewers which is really great!) and those instances are more fun to talk about bc they involve adults having tantrums on social media
but it’s obviously way more about the ways that any kind of criticism- political, aesthetic, ethical, structural, personal- will completely ostracize you from any org that controls resources both social and capital
artistic directors will look you in the eye and thank you for bringing up your concerns and then turn around and silently write your name on a long long list of people they will never hire, recommend, or support
so do i want to be involved with any institutions that are built around a deep fear of criticism? of course not! do i kind of need to be because some hideous percentage of funding is controlled by those orgs and i literally can’t have a career without them? yes of course!!
