The more I think about it the more I see how the Legend of Zelda's (especially Twilight Princess) narrative is just laced with antisemitism. I still enjoy the game but I think it's good to admit media you consume has bad qualities (or in this case really shitty). 1/?
Disclaimer: This has probably been pointed out before. I am open to criticism and am white as well as Jewish so keep those two things in mind with this thread. I like the Legend of Zelda as well but I just like to be critical of media I like because of tropes like this.
So, what about TP makes it antisemitic? Well, in order to understand this I'll just list off a few things and then go more in-depth in this thread.
-Ganon's design
-Ganon's placement on the Triforce
-Link's being the hero
First, let's review Ganon's design. Now, I don't think it's too far of a stretch to say that twilight princess is going for a "Dark-skinned = bad" thing here which in itself has a racist feel to it. Not only this but he has a resemblance to goblins.
Goblins are inherently antisemitic. They were made specifically to depict Jewish people in an offensive way. Goblins, like in Harry Potter, can be seen running the banks because some like to believe Jewish people think they have a "god-given power".
Ganon is depicted like your stereotypical antisemitic goblin having lots of power. In fact, this power is god-given like how antisemites think Jewish religion depicts Jewish people as having a god-given power. This creates a false sense of Jewish arrogance to antisemites.
Hell, another nail in the coffin is Ganon having a Boar form. Some goblins are also depicted with pig noses so this is something you definitely shouldn't write off.
We've established that Ganon's design is antisemitic and what his resemblance to goblins implies, so let's also talk about his place on the tri-force. I somewhat already covered that Ganon has a god-given power, but so does Link so that alone might not seem like it's bad.
There are three god-given powers to keep in mind. Wisdom (Zelda), Courage (Link), and Power (Ganon). Ganon being power, of all things, while having the design he does is just another detail that can't be left unchecked. Like I said before, to be antisemitic people-
write narratives of Jewish people having a power like money or something else. They depict Jewish people as an evil that needs to be defeated because they use their supposed power for bad deeds. It can be seen in many fantasy novels.
And, to the last point: How is Link being the hero antisemitic?
I don't think I need to point out that he has blonde hair and blue eyes while also being white but I will just so we don't leave that box unchecked here.
Link is courage. Link is courage and seen as the hero for all of Hyrule. He's chosen by the gods to defeat the evil in the world that is also chosen by the gods. And who is he saving the world from? The Jews. Because, in the most antisemitic way possible, that's what
Ganon is depicted as.
