anime terminology/vocabulary guide, a thread:
— anime refers to japanese hand-drawn or computer animation.
— manga are japanese comics that are typically read from back to front, and from left to right.
— there are different types of anime for who the intended audience is (kodomo, shonen, shojo, seinen, josei, harem, reverse harem)
- kodomo anime/manga defines children’s anime. popular kodomo anime includes hello kitty and pokemon.
— shōnen anime/manga is meant for young boys
— shōjo anime/manga is meant for girls. shōjo usually features human emotions and relationship.
— seinen manga are japanese comics for young men,there are also seinen anime. much the same way that shônen is meant for boys up to about high school age, seinen is meant for men older than high school age. it’s basically the next male demographic.
— josei anime/manga is intended for women older than high school age. it is the next female demographic after shōjo. much like shōnen and seinen there is a little overlap. josei might share some traits with shôjo, but josei tends to be more realistic.
— harem anime/manga is where a male character is surrounded by many female characters.
— reverse harem is the opposite of harem, with a group of males centering round a singular female, usually with three or more males.
— moe a slang word used to describe someone or something that's small, precious, or adorable. stemming from kanji which means to "bud" or "sprout," moe anime centers around youthful and idealized female characters.
— filler episode is a content that has no point or continuity in the story, and has been put in simply to fill time until the next narratively significant moment in the story.
— "bishies" short for the japanese word "bishonen," meaning "pretty boy" or "beautiful boy." males with feminine features are often called bishies
— seiyuu is a japanese voice actor or actress. the term is used by anime fans when talking about the voice behind an anime character in the original, undubbed japanese animations.
— yandere refers to a person who starts out sweet, but ends up being obsessive and often violent with their emotions towards people.
— tsundere is someone who is originally cold and mean, but ends up being a sweet and caring person deep down.
— kuudere is a cool headed character often seen with an emotionless blank expression and deadpan voice
— kamidere is a characters with a god-complex. their powers are only matched by their arrogance.
— otaku is a Japanese term used for a die-hard fan of anything. If you're obsessed with something, then you're an otaku. but it is often termed to as die-hard fan of anime.
— weeabo/weeb refers to someone who's completely obsessed with japan and japanese alike. unlike otaku, this is usually a derogatory term used for someone who wants to be japanese, even though they are not.
— anime/manga that revolves around romantic female relationships is called yuri (girls love)
— anime/manga that revolves around gay relationships is call yaoi (boy love). this often includes a seme (the "top," dominant figure) pursuing an uke (the "bottom," submissive figure).
— ecchi is a japanese slang for playfully sexual. in anime, dirty humor is ecchi
— a pettanko is a girl who's totally obsessed or insecure with the fact that she's flat chested; she's typically jealous of her more developed peers. pettanko characters are also referred to as Delicious Flat Chest or DFC.
— waifu/husbando refers to having a crush on an anime a character to the point of wanting to marry them
— Original Video Animation (OVA) can also be written the other way around (as OAV), but means the exact same thing. it's the anime version of the phrase "straight-to-video" and is used when the animation is released directly to the market
— Anime Music Video (AMV) refers to someone editing footage from an anime and mashing it together with a song in the form of a music video.
— mangaka is a term for manga artist/author
— gaiden basically refers to a spinoff work, or other kinds of side stories.
— gakuran is the uniform made for middle school and high school students in japan
— hentai is the japanese word for "pervert" but is also termed to as anime p*rn
