After reading Mosiah 4 in #ComeFollowMe the section about charity and serving the poor has lead me to think about how we can be better as a people to serve our fellow man. (This will get political so if that's not your thing, steer clear).
The ultimate solution is you, not the
government, giving of your own free will and choice to the poor.
King Benjamin connects serving others, specifically the poor, to retaining a remission of sins (see Mosiah 4:20-21, 26). In my opinion, government "giving" by wealth redistribution (with some money finding its
way into some politician's pockets) isn't charity since:
1. The intent to help others from you serving the poor and needy is removed by the centralized government entity redistributing your money/donations;
2. The personal connections made by serving others is lost completely;
3. In my opinion, government is the least effective and slowest method of getting things done and those in need may need immediate help;
4. As eluded to above, there is no guarantee that money given to government would even end up helping those who need it.
5. The changes that you experience by loving and serving others is removed when you transfer sole responsibility to care for others to government.
Now, I do believe that we as individuals can make a far more lasting impact on helping others through individual and local
Community service groups than saying, "let's tax rich people more in the hopes that there poor get some of that money". I believe that we each have a divine obligation, especially those who are endowed, to care for the well-being of others.
As a financial ward clerk in my ward, I've seen the impact for good the Church has in serving those in need and how other members serve those in need in my ward on a daily basis. Their examples inspire me to be a more holy person and to seek opportunities to help the needy.
Of course, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, was the perfect example for all of us to serve those in need around us. I suspect that those who will be in need will grow a lot in the next few months and we all can get to work helping them out. If we are united in Christ,
We will see miracles
