This week's #WednesdayWritingTips is a response to something I read the other day.
A frustrated writer said, 'It was hard before Covid-19, now it's going to be impossible. Why bother?'
Here's my response.
Working in the creative industry IS hard. It's unpredictable, frustrating, sometimes badly paid. This is the reality and it's something we need to accept. Or, we decide it's not for us, and that's absolutely fine.
But...

If this is where your heart is, please don't give up. Professional creatives are trying hard to create accessible opportunities for you. They WANT to nurture new writers. They WANT to help you keep going. Be encouraged at this passion. You are not alone.

We need stories. We are always going to need stories. Perhaps more than ever. Books are selling well. Publishers may be delaying releases (and that will have a knock-on effect) but they will always have a schedule to fill.

Use this strange pause to take stock. If you're struggling with creativity, try and develop your craft, or read, or research. It's not time wasted. It's time spent differently.
Keep connected and keep motivated. Momentum is incredibly helpful.

Nobody knows exactly how this will play out financially. It WILL be hard for people trying to break out (as well as for established creatives!). But if your story is strong, if your voice is strong, it will be sellable. People are still looking for talent.

Covid-19 has taken so much already. Don't let it take your creativity and your dreams, too. Fight for them. It will take resolve, energy that you may find hard to muster.
Remind yourself why you want this, why this is your dream. Hold on to that thought.
