Sigh... I still don't understand why do many people feel like they're ready to translate when they clearly are not. Understanding what it means doesn't mean they are able to translate it, especially when they are also not fluent in the language they're translating it to.
There's so many translations floating around with so many errors and mis-interpretstions. I feel like a big problem is that they're translating from a language theyre not fluent in, into a language they're also not fluent in. I don't understand the point.
Sure, we can all say "please correct me if I'm wrong" or "please point out any mistakes", but the truth is, the people who seek out and read translations are not going to recognize the errors, and the people who are able to make corrections don't bother reading translations.
Also, so many of these don't include the original source...so even if someone were to try and make corrections, there's no reference. How is someone supposed to correct an error when they don't have the source?
Therefore it results in a cycle of:
- wrong translations being circulated
- intl fans being misinformed
- readers thank and praise translator bc they don't recognize the mistakes
- translator gains confidence and does more translations that likely contain more misinformation

"If you get the gist of it, what's so bad?"
Think of how the members feel if they find out how differently something they said had been interpreted because of a wrong translation. There's been many times where these have become fandom jokes and people end up dragging members.

Think of what would happen and how they would feel when it eventually goes back to them, especially when we have so many ways to communicate directly with them (comments and replies on sns, etc.) We know for a fact they search for themselves on sns. Think of the consequences.
"This is work done for free, we should be thankful and understanding."
I'm sure they worked hard, and of course fanmade content is usually done for free, but if the whole point is to understand the original content, then why should we encourage the spread of false information?

"They're still learning."
Keep learning and try again when they're ready. The point is not to discourage translating as a means of studying your target language. Translating is a good way to learn, but posting it publicly when the info isn't accurate should not be celebrated.

With how fast some people churn these halfway translations out and post it asap, I really can't help but think that all they really care for is the internet attention and thanks that they get, along with followers/likes/rts

A good quality translation takes lots of time and research, proofreading, asking for advice or second opinions, etc. Translating is hard. It requires a really good grasp of both/all of th4 languages you're working with.
