Not only does the author of this article need a lesson on how we describe intersex people, they've left a huge elephant in the text's room.
"...viewed as a threat to social order and their bodies had to be controlled."
Medieval attitudes in 2020 prevail!
Aside from flippantly describing intersex genital mutilation: "In contrast to modern day intervention where an operation is decided by the parents and health professionals at the time of birth."
(Sentence made me shudder.)
Aside from that, this article makes sense of why intersex
people have continued to be incorrectly seen as unnatural. The Medieval teachings were so horrific and inaccurate that poets were describing us as disloyal, perverted and evil. Adams and Eves only!
We are slowly changing this ridiculous, bigoted, hateful ignorance towards us,
there will be an end to harmful and nonconsenual intersex surgeries.
I would like to say to the author of this, and any other historian wanting to write about intersex people.
DO THE RESEARCH ON WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY BEFORE YOU WRITE TO SENSATIONALISE THE PAST!
@Medievalists
Intersex people in the world today still facing Medieval attitudes and abuses. Compare and report on that please!
