Imma keep it funky witchall. The racism I have witnessed as a parent leader has been shockingly eye opening. I need each & every single parent with a vested interest in an intersectional school system beyond this pandemic to fill out this survey and make their voices heard. https://twitter.com/cnequan/status/1252753576444772358
Yes- I know. So many of us w the most to gain from a reimagined system of education have already divested from this one. I get it. I had given up as well. Supplementing at home & planning to open my own school. And you know? I still plan to do those things & teach my kids @ home.
The thing is- there are so many parents who don’t have the option to teach their own children, to take them out of school, to home school, to hire tutors, etc. for the same reasons remote learning is such an inequitable system despite educators best efforts. Structural inequity.
That being said, we have to consider not only our children- but other people’s children. Like the 300,000 students who had to wait and are STILL waiting for devices. The kids whose parents were told ‘oh, YOU don’t get the free internet cause you couldn’t pay the bill.’
The children of color whose parents are being conveniently folded into a conversation about frontline workers w zero nuance. Our food insecure families living in temporary housing, our families w mixed immigration statuses afraid to fill out paperwork necessary for Covid relief.
Our Asian students some of whose families are facing discrimination as we speak. The Latinx & Black families dying at higher rates than anyone else. All the families with no access to info in their native language.
Our students with IEPs whose services are IMPOSSIBLE to replicate online despite the best efforts of our service providers. Not to mention the socio emotional and culturally responsive needs ALL students will arrive back to school with after experiencing loss social contact.
All of these things, whether OUR children experience them personally or not- MATTER- and if we can’t see even in the midst of a global pandemic that we should be SUPPORTING one another rather than in constant competition for seats at the table of the elite- well. That’s just sad!
I say all that to say this: please take the survey at the beginning of this thread and call on @DOEChancellor @BilldeBlasio @NYGovCuomo @NYCSchools @MarkTreyger718 @nycpa to be intersectional, restorative and student centered in their approach to grading during remote learning.
