Now, skipping to Item 8 from CM Harrison: "Urgency Ordinance: Commercial Rent Increase Restrictions During the COVID-19 Emergency." See the revised item: https://www.berkeleyside.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Item-8-Rev-Harrison-Supp-3.pdf">https://www.berkeleyside.com/wp-conten... #berkmtg
Harrison says, under this item, rent cannot be raised during the emergency to functionally evict someone. The limit would be 10%. (Even though people can ask for a grace period to pay rent under current rules, rent is still accruing and will be due at some point.) #berkmtg
CM Bartlett says the state is going to need to rethink rental policies broadly given how much people are being impacted by COVID-19, economically and otherwise. If approved, the new law on commercial rents would be in effect through May, staff says. #berkmtg
Here& #39;s some background on the item from Harrison& #39;s office, though the earlier link in this thread has the revised version that& #39;s up for discussion (but this has more context). https://www.berkeleyside.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/2020-04-21-Item-08-Urgency-Ordinance-Commercial.pdf">https://www.berkeleyside.com/wp-conten... #berkmtg
