patients share rooms & beds aren't that far apart. Meals & activities happen in area that force crowding people into an area. There are 3 shift changes, bringing in entire different staff to take vitals, dispense medication & whatever other care pts require. The units are 2/
small, able to accommodate only pt rooms nursing area & just adequate therapy areas. Isolating sick pts is not possible, in fact there are rarely doors dividing units into "regions". Extra room takes away from making the most profit, so economy is key. Use is made of all space 3/
and Covid-19 is carried about w/o ppl showing symptoms anyway. Usually, as psych pt, you share a toilet, shower, sink, bedroom area w another pt, who may or may not be hygienically inclined, who may or may not be with it. It's uncontrolled environment, all types of pts, all ages.
And let me add as final thought, psych units are designed for pts in crisis. Crisis may mean a person is acting psychotic, can't respect personal boundaries, is actively suicidal or trying to self-harm, can't care for themselves at home, being chaotic. They aren't healing places.
