"Will we do more to advance the cause of human rights if #China is isolated or if our nations are engaged in a growing web of political and economic cooperation and contacts?” - Bill Clinton, 1994, upon delinking trade policy from China's human rights. https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/news/articles/lee-smith-china-coronavirus-1
With the benefit of hindsight, we now know that the "web of political and economic cooperation and contacts" with China changed us more than it changed them. Will we be able to free ourselves? It depends on your actions and sacrifices today.
We also know that policy of economic engagement with China failed to fix its human rights problems, but did massively empower its economy and with it China's military. That military is now threatening us in Asia, which China demands as its own sphere of influence.
Shouldn't we have a law against people with conflicts of interest serving in our govertnment? Which fox guarding the chicken coop will pass such a law?
