It's odd to me that while France is often called "eldest daughter of the church" Cromwell and other English figures considered Spain to be the implacable and ultimate papist enemy with whom there could be no peace, while France was only an incidental and occasional foe.
I realize this is probably just because of Gallicanism and relative unities with the Pope, but I still find the whole thing intellectually provocative.
