The Holocaust was built upon both deeply rooted antisemitism in European culture as well as preceding racist systems around the world. 3/
But this isn’t taught in the holocaust unit people have in their history class. If it is, it’s not taught with any depth.

Someone generally has to proactively seek it out, whether in the form of signing up for a specific university class or just seeking books. 4/
Aside from the paradigm-shifting mind-fuck of A People’s History of the United States that was assigned as summer reading ahead of my APUS history class, I didn’t have similarly eye-opening experiences with history until college where I had a major in the social sciences. 5/
So, to actually make a point at the end of this meandery thread, if someone from a historically oppressed group is speaking about their own group’s historic oppression, shut up and listen. It’s not an invite for whataboutery in any form. 6/
