"The problem with video-conferencing is that the body is but isn’t there." Something I've been thinking about a lot in the last couple of weeks as it relates to remote work and communication challenges despite everyone being so connected through technology https://theconvivialsociety.substack.com/p/a-theory-of-zoom-fatigue?curator=MediaREDEF
"The body is there as a two dimensional image before us, interacting with us in something approaching simultaneity. But because we are not actually sharing the same physical space, we can’t quite achieve the optimal grip we’re accustomed to achieving in conversation."
^ this to me sums it up and highlights the deficiencies of remote work and teleconferencing, it fundamentally lacks the physical cues and personal focus of in-person interaction and triggers counter-productive stimuli. "We're on the call but not really."
That's not to say it's not a solution to tackle existing traditional corporate wastefulness but IMO the forward path is one that balances both the benefits of collaborative physical proximity and virtual efficiencies of electronic communication.
